Bereavement Volunteers

Bereavement Volunteers support the Social Work Department in the provision of a range of services aimed at supporting bereaved people.

The two areas of work the Bereavement Volunteers are currently involved in are:

  • Hosting the ‘Cup of Tea and Chat Club’ each Sunday afternoon. Final meeting, Sunday 4th March 2012.
  • Facilitation of Bereavement Support Groups for adults who are grieving the death of their spouse, their parent or their child.
  • Facilitation of monthly Drop-in Support Group for Bereaved Spouses.

In their role as group facilitators, bereavement volunteers draw on their knowledge and understanding of the process of grief and demonstrate their capacity to be empathic towards others who are grieving. The volunteers utilise their listening and group facilitation skills to create an atmosphere of warmth and understanding in a place to which bereaved people come to share their experience of loss with others who understand.

If you would like further information on volunteering with the Bereavement Service please contact the Social Work Department during office hours on 061 485 800.
